I came across this on Brad Feld’s other blog, as he was writing about an Open Coffee Club that was getting started in Boulder Colorado. It, the Open Coffee Club, is a place where people who love start ups can hang out and meet. The coffee clubs are popping up all over the place, from Boston to Boulder, from Sacramento to Stockholm. The idea was started by Saul Klein as an attempt to establish recognized, open and regular meeting places where entrepreneurs can meet with investors (and anyone else who fancies coming along) in a totally informal setting.

This strikes me as a very good idea, for multiple reasons. Entrepreneurs are located all over the world, not just in Silicon Valley (I am sure some would argue that only the good ones are there), and this idea gives those entrepreneurs a venue to informally meet and discuss their ideas with VCs local to them. For investors, this gives them the opportunity to discovery some very good ideas in their own backyards, and potentially fund companies that they can be more physically involved in due to proximity.

To date, there is not a coffee club in the Washington DC area, but I think it would be a great idea for someone to get one started. The DC area covers quite a bit of geography, so I would like to see one in the Northern Virginia area. I am more than willing to set one up, it would be pretty simple threw Upcoming.org or Meetup.com (those are the two that they suggest setting your group up through), but it would be no fun if it was just me :-( . If you are an investor or entrepreneur and know of others who would be interested, leave a comment and we can get one started.

  1. [...] A few weeks ago, I posted on the Open Coffee Club’s that are popping up across the country and the rest of the world and how we need something like this in the DC area. Well, it seems as if my call for action has been answered (sort of, it is not a coffee club, but it is just as good). My co-worker, Frank Gruber (of SomewhatFrank fame) and his good friend Eric Olson created TechCocktail while in Chicago (Eric is still there and works for Feedburner), and they are holding their inaugural DC event on Thursday, May 17th. 2. [...] About a month ago I posted about the Open Coffee Clubs that are popping up all across the country and the world. At the time, it seemed like the closest one to the DC area was up in New York(correct me if I am wrong here, please), so it looked like they were heading our way. Well low and behold, I read a posting on Nick O’Neill’s blog (The Webpreneur) that a new chapter has been started in DC. Unfortunately for me, the first gathering was this morning at the Caribou Coffee on 17th St. NW, and I just found out about it today. [...]
